Locomotion, Shildon | Durham

Locomotion: the National Railway Museum celebrates Shildon's history as one of the world's oldest railway towns. Railway enthusiasts will love this museum that tells the history of the train and the incredible journey that it has taken.

The first passenger train on the first passenger railway in the world left from Shildon in 1825, so it is only fitting that the National Railway Museum be based here.

Locomotion has something for everyone, even if you don't consider yourself to be a train enthusiast. Get up and close to dozens of legendary locomotives and their restoration projects, as well as special events throughout the year.

Entry to the museum is free and it is open 10.00 - 16.00 in the winter, 10.00 to 17.00 in the summer.
