Free Entry to Historic Sites in Wales

History lovers in Wales, this one's for you! Throughout September 2026, more than 200 of Wales' historic sites, landmarks and hidden gems are throwing open their doors completely FREE as part of Cadw's annual Open Doors festival. It's Wales' contribution to the European Heritage Days initiative, and it's a brilliant excuse to explore corners of the country you might never have thought to visit — including several sites that are usually closed to the public.

The line-up is seriously varied: castles, abbeys, Roman forts, country houses, chapels, gardens, archives and more are all taking part across every region of Wales. Some sites are open throughout the whole of September; others have specific dates, guided tours or events — so it's well worth using the searchable events listing to find what's happening near you. Events run throughout September, with the final dates on 30th September 2026. Click our pink button below to browse all the Open Doors events and plan your visit.
