Sometimes I follow my heart, sometimes my head, but most importantly I follow my stomach.
For me, travelling is all about the food - the sights and sounds of a new place are fantastic, don't get me wrong, but there's something special walking through markets looking at colours of spices and weird and wonderful fruit and vegetables. Its exciting to sit at a table with friends and gushing at all the delicious local delicacies on offer and pausing at different street foods weighing up whether to indulge in a little snack.
Sadly I've never been to Egypt, but it's definitely on my list. Egyptian cuisine holds dishes for everyone - meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. The meals are simply but beautifully made with fresh spices and vegetables and the best thing - they don't hold back on portions.
Bread is a big thing in my life and a big thing in Egypt too so I'm told. There are lots of different types, from hearty pita bread to Aish Mirahrah - a thinner and crispier bread which resembles chapatti. Bread is used for scooping up sauces, food and dips, for wrapping and sandwich making.
Egyptian food shares the Eastern Mediterranean methods of rice-stuffed vegetables, baklava and rice-stuffed pigeon. There is plenty of garlic and onion in all the dishes - coincidentally my two favourite bases for recipes.
In conclusion, I like eating and Egypt sounds like a fantastic place to do it in. The colours and sights of food inspire me within my own cooking.
