Published in 1860, The Mill on the Floss is considered a feminist novel with a strong moral message. It tells the story of young siblings, Tom and Maggie, growing up in a mill on the River Floss. The novel follows their lives from childhood, all the way through their lives right up to their deaths caused by the flooding of the river.

Many have observed there are some autobiographical elements to this novel, where George Eliot draws on her own experiences.
