If you're on a tight Christmas budget but don't want to leave anyone off the gift list then why not make your own Infused Chilli Olive Oil.
They make an extra-special present that doesn't cost the earth to make. Infact, if you already have the ingredients and a few bits and bobs - like ribbons and buttons - you can make it for free!
I saw this great recipe for Chilli Infused Olive Oil in the Metro newspaper this morning...
To make 1 bottle you will need:
Empty beer bottle - washed, sterilised and labels removed
Cork to fit
200ml Extra virgin olive oil
Sprigs of thyme
Pinch of dried oregano
3 bay leaves
1 garlic cloves
6-7 small dried red chillies
How to make the Infused Chilli Olive Oil:
Step 1: Pour the olive oil in a saucepan with the thyme, oregano, bay leaves and garlic. Crumble in the chillies, discarding the stalks.
Step 2: Place over a medium heat and gently simmer - you want to warm the ingredients rather than fry them. Season with salt.
Step 3: Cook for 15 minutes or until the chillies become fragrant and the garlic soft.
Step 4: Remove from the heat, allow the oil to cool down and pour the whole mixture into the bottle and seal with the cork.
Decorate the bottle:
Make a small hole through the centre of the cork and superglue a large unwanted button to the top.
Add your own personal touch by decorating the bottle as you wish but I will be using old ribbons tied around the neck of the bottle with handmade labels.
It's worth noting that the olive oil will keep for about a month - so make it close to the date you want to give it away and let them know to use it before it goes off.
Let me know how you get on!
