Free Heritage Open Days Events
History lovers, this one is well worth saving the date for. Heritage Open Days returns from 11 to 20 September 2026, bringing England's largest free festival of history and culture back for another brilliant year. Managed by the National Trust and supported by thousands of volunteers, the festival opens up hundreds of venues across England — from medieval buildings and Roman forts to Georgian mansions and local hidden gems — completely free to visit.
This year's spotlight is on architecture, with a packed programme of walks, tours, talks and community celebrations to help you explore England's diverse built heritage. Whether you fancy a guided tour of somewhere usually closed to the public, a family-friendly day out, or a stroll through somewhere with a great local story to tell, there's something for everyone across the ten days. No purchase necessary; some events require pre-booking, so it's worth checking the listings before you head out. Click our pink button below to find events near you on the Heritage Open Days website.
