Making a visit
It was in this simple sandstone house in a quiet Dumfries street that Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, spent the last years of his life. He died here in 1796 at the age of just thirty seven. The house shows us how the poet and his family lived in the late eighteenth century, and is now a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world. The sales area has books, gifts and keepsakes, all with a Burns connection. Burns House will close early at 3pm on Tuesday 20th February for staff training. We apologise for any inconvenience. Robert Burns' Mausoleum is only a short distance from Burns House in St Michael's Kirkyard. From Monday 25th March through to Monday 30th September 2024, the mausoleum will be opened for short visits on Mondays to Saturdays at 11.15-11.30am and 2.15-2.30pm. No need to book, just turn up and a member of our team will show you in and share some of the history.- Price or Free Admission

Four steps with handrails lead from the cobbled street to the door of Robert Burns House. Two rooms can be viewed on the ground floor. Visitors climb a narrow stair with a handrail to four more rooms on the first floor.
The closest public toilets, including disabled access toilets, are in the nearby Loreburn Shopping Centre.
Although many artefacts are displayed in glass cases, we have a range of handling artefacts for visitors to connect with the story of the house. Our front-of-house colleagues will be very pleased to welcome visitors and describe and discuss the artefacts and manuscripts in display cases for visitors with sight loss.
We have a trail for families based on the children of Robert Burns and costume and hats based on the style of the 1790s for visitors to try on.
We regret that dogs are not permitted inside the building except for assistance dogs.
Our colleagues have had basic training in deafness awareness and diversity awareness. They will be pleased to welcome you and do their best to assist visitors. If you have a specific question or something you’d like to check before your visit please email via [email protected] or call Robert Burns House on 01387 255297
