Visit The Wilson

Welcome to The Wilson – Gloucestershire’s premier art gallery and museum. Home to an internationally significant museum collection of exceptional quality and variety, changing displays of our Designated Arts and Crafts Movement collection, fine art collections, and The Open Archive, which houses our fascinating archives relating to Antarctic explorer Edward A. Wilson, Cheltenham’s history, and the Emery Walker Library.

We’re home to the Sir Charles Irving Community Art Gallery, Summerfield Exhibition Gallery, and brand new World of Wonders children’s gallery.

Making Connections

Redevelopment Programme for the Collections Galleries at the Wilson.

Unlocking more of The Wilson’s collections so we can reconnect your collections and your stories, in your museum.

The Making Connections project is transforming the Victorian part of The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum. The renovation works are made possible by funding from DCMS, Wolfson Museums Improvement Fund, and our community partners Cheltenham Borough Council and Friends of The Wilson.

The Victorian Wing, the original part of the building, which dates back to 1899, will be transformed, working with and maintaining the original architectural features. Renovations will begin later this summer. We expect to reopen in summer 2025.

We will be moving thousands of collections objects this summer and we will be showing sneaky peaks behind the scenes both in our galleries and on our website and social media.

As a result of this work, there will be some disruption to our visitors.  We will update this page as the work develops.

Wilson partial closure information

The Wilson will be partially closed (second floor – including the Maker’s Space, Arts and Crafts Movement Gallery and Monument Gallery – currently housing part of the temporary Frozen Continent exhibition) on the following dates: Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 January 2024 and Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 January 2024 due to large collection moves relating to our exciting redevelopment and reinterpretation of the Victorian Wing Galleries.

The exciting project provides a unique opportunity to redisplay the collections and unlock stories not heard before! We are entering a next phase of fundraising for these new displays, your donation could make a huge difference.
